Chapter 15

“Okay, I need you all to get your heads in the game,” Cole announced, pacing back and forth in the kitchen while the rest of us sat at the breakfast nook, observing him with various degrees of amusement and/or frustration.

Safe to say, Cole had not taken the news that Bubbles was out on a date right now with Pack Early Courting Gift well. Not even the cookie dough ice cream had soothed his ire. He’d gone to dramatically throw it in the garbage, before changing his mind and shoving it in the freezer instead.

“I don’t want to point fingers, but this is all of your faults,” Cole continued.

Kaito rolled his eyes.

“I haven’t met Bubbles yet! All three of you have! We’d be halfway to mated by now if you’d put me on the Allure job, but nooooo. I’m stuck at the Hayes’ house, redoing a bathroom, while all of you met Bubbles and didn’t ask her out.”

I glanced at Arata to see if he was going to do one of his calming-yet-motivational pep talks, but he took a swig of his beer and shrugged a shoulder at me, letting Cole get it out of his system. Cole was a great packmate, and I loved him like a brother, but he was garbage at handling disappointment.

And we were all disappointed. Arata was trying to remain optimistic, and I was doing my best to hold on to that good feeling I’d had when I talked to Bubbles this morning, but Kaito looked like he’d given up hope altogether—if he’d ever had any.

Where was Bubbles now? Had they gone out to dinner? Maybe a show? She had been super dressed up. Was she home by now? Would she go home tonight?

For all we knew, the next time we saw Bubbles, she could have a mating mark on her neck.

“We need to debrief and make a game plan,” Cole insisted, vacillating between blame and action.

“We’ve already debriefed,” Kaito snapped. Oh good, now they were going to be at each other’s throats on top of our existential crisis.

“Don’t you start,” Cole ordered, pointing his beer bottle at Kaito. “You’re at the top of my shit list. You met Bubbles first and then just wandered off to do business boy shit instead of asking her out like you should have.”

“Business boy shit?” Kaito repeated incredulously.

“I said what I said.”

“None of you would have met Bubbles if it wasn’t for my business boy shit,” Kaito grumbled under his breath. Fair point.

“Debrief,” Cole insisted, ignoring him. Arata shook with silent laughter, shaking his head. “What do we know about Bubbles?”

I sighed heavily, twisting the bottle I was holding between my hands. “She’s really kind. Her Aunt Lu is a beta who played professional beach volleyball in Brazil. She likes sparkly scrunchies and the glittery dance costumes she gets to wear. She loved dancing with the other omegas in the Christmas show. She smells like gingerbread and sin.”

“I thought my first conversation with her went really well,” Arata added, looking contemplative.
